Bloginners – because everyone has to start somewhere

by Maureen on February 21, 2013

bloginners.comA new year and a new venture.  As some of you know, I’ve been living full time off the Internet since 1995 and have been blogging for years.  I get asked for help often and I love doing it, whether it’s helping someone change their permalink structure or putting a new blog/website together for someone.  I’ve decided that it’s time to put some of my knowledge and experience to better use so I created

I’ve owned the domain name for several (lots) years because I knew I wanted to do something like this but where oh where to find the time.  Well, the time is now.

Last week I organised a blogging group in my home to talk about blogging — where we are and where we want to go and how to get there.  I was inspired by all the blogging background in the group and I know that by working together and promoting and supporting each other, all of our blogs will become better.

Why Start a Blog?

A blog or website on a blogging platform like WordPress is a great way to market or promote your business, product or yourself.  It’s also a great way to share your experiences in a way that will help others going through a similar circumstance.  Think of parenting websites or health websites.

Become an authority in your field or niche.  You know what you’re good at and it’s time the rest of the world knew it too.  A blog will help you expand your reach and legitimise your expertise.

A blog will help you connect with like-minded people in a way that you will all grow from the experience by sharing your thoughts and opinions.  It will also keep you up to date with what’s going on in your field around the world.

Finally, if you’re passionate about a cause, a blog is a great way to share your opinions about social issues and the political scene in your area.  A blog is a great way to make a difference.

How Easy Is It to Create a Blog or Website?

You don’t need to know HTML coding or know the difference between a widget and a plugin.  All you need is a domain name, a webhosting account and the ability to run a keyboard. Oh.. and desire and some ideas.  Ideas are very important and without them, blogging becomes a chore and that’s not fun.

I use the WordPress platform and it takes me about 3 hours to put a site together.  Now that’s no content and no optimisation but in 3 hours I am up and running and ready to add my pearls of wisdom.  If I can do it, anyone can.

My personal work history started back in the olden days in a previous century when right out of university with a teaching degree I went to work for a work glove manufacturing company.  I left there 12 years later as general manager — but there was no blogging.  Hell, personal computers were just coming on the market.

I left there and went to a t-shirt company in Florida and I traveled the southeast of the US buying yarn, finding factories to knit it into t-shirt material and then finding factories to sew the fabric into t-shirts.  The company I worked for did screen printing.  Remember back when everyone wore t-shirts with printing on them?  Still no blogs.

By the time I moved to Australia this whole WWW thing was really taking off and I held on with both hands.  This background is only to show that if I can do this, anyone can.

Static Page or Blog?

This all depends on what your goal is.  I have blogs on all my sites because that’s what I do.  I don’t sell services or products – my only income streams are paid advertising and sponsored posts but I only do those for brands I use and respect.

For anyone with a product or service, static page(s) are what I’d recommend.  Check out Call Reluctance Queen by Madonna Robinson and see how she combines her business on the front end with a blog with great content linked from her navigation bar.  This setup would work just as well with an e-commerce setup for products.

I do recommend a blog be included with any site because  a blog allows you to add fresh, relevant content as often as your readers require.  Google LOVES fresh content and will reward you and that reward will sell products and services for your business.
